I'm Gonna Hire A Wino...
You may be wondering how the title of this article relates to the images. If you read on, it will all become clear and I promise it is funny. So enjoy!
A few years back I was a member of a networking organization where we had to introduce ourselves and our businesses each time we met. Introductions were very well organized, meeting members of our group outside our weekly meetings was highly encouraged. People really got to know and trust one another. We all referred our businesses to each other as well as people outside the group. It really worked.

A dead corner turned into a pretty bar area. Simple floating shelves and a cabinet on fifties-style legs and you are good to go!
One day the event organizer suggested we introduce our businesses in a different way. She proposed we find a song that would reflect what we do. I thought this was a great idea but I was worried I might not find a song that would reflect interior design. Really, who would sing about that! Most songs are about love, lost loves, travel that highway, feelings and not really about what to do with your tired looking living room.

Have an awkward corner somewhere? Why not install some cabinetry and a small fridge. Add the glasses and the bottles and you have a great drink-serving area. You won’t really need a sink, so plumbing is not required.
I searched Google and soon I stumbled upon David Frizzell, a country singer from the south of the US. Frizzell started his singing career in the fifties and reached success in the eighties. I had never heard of him, let alone his music. Frizzell just happened to have a song called ‘I’m Gonna Hire A Wino to Decorate Our Home’. Now, I am not a fan of country music. I don’t listen to it. I don’t purchase it. I don’t watch shows about it. I don’t do line or square dancing. I am not saying it is not good music in terms of structure, melody, lyrics etc. It is just not my style. Well, you get the drift. But I was curious and I listened to this particularly song.
It was so funny. It was hilarious. It still is and it was so right for my purpose. I found the lyrics to the song and I purchased it on iTunes. I played it while driving, drafting, designing, shopping, cleaning, cooking etc. For a about 5 days I listened to nothing else but this song. I learned the lyrics, the melody and I found myself all set for the next meeting. I was going to surprise everyone.

This bar area has the same ‘feeling’ as the song has! A bit rough, a bit rustic, a country!
At our next meeting I was ready to do my introduction! It was a great success at that meeting. We were in stitches! Everyone loved the song relative to my business. And, by then the song was definitely in my head. I could no longer escape it and even now, a few years later, I find that occasionally it pops into my head where it can linger for hours. If I want to feel happy when out and about I like to listen to it and sing along with it. Particularly in the car, I can turn up the volume and belt it out. Here are the lyrics:
I came crawling home last night, like many nights before:
I finally made it to my feet as she opened up the door.
And she said, "You're not gonna do this anymore.”
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall.”
She said: "Just bring your Friday pay check, and I'll cash them all right here.
"And I'll keep on tap - for all your friends, their favourite kinds of beer.
"And for you, I'll always keep in stock, those soft aluminum cans.
"And when you're feeling macho, you can crush them like a man.”
She said: "We'll rip out all the carpet, and put sawdust on the floor.
"Serve hard boiled eggs and pretzels, and I won't cook no more.
"There'll be Monday night football, on T.V. above the bar.
"And a pay phone in the hallway, when your friends can't find their car.”
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall.”
She said: "You'll get friendly service, and for added atmosphere.
"I'll slip on something sexy, and I'll cut it clear to here.
"Then you can slap my bottom, every time you tell a joke.
"Just as long as you keep tipping, well, I'll laugh until you're broke.”
She said: "Instead of family quarrels, we'll have a bar-room brawl,
"When the Ham's bear say's its closing time, you won't have far to crawl.
"And when you run out of money, you'll have me to thank.
"You can sleep it off next morning, when I'm putting it in the bank.”
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino, to decorate our home,
"So you can feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"When you and your friends get off from work, and have a powerful thirst.
"There won't be any reason, why you can't stop off here first.”
I am not sure whether it is lawful to put the audio in this blog, but for the moment I am going to go with that, with my respects and compliments to Frizzell and songwriter Dewayne Blackwell for giving me then and now such a good time. Here it is.
And, in keeping with the lyrics you are seeing some really great entertainment areas you could create in your home, a couple more easily than the other two, depending on the space you have and your budget - yes it is always about the budget, isn’t it.

Have lots of room or a great basement and a good, healthy budget? Above bar will be a nice man-cove retreat. I can see a lot of parties in this area, or just plain hanging out with friends and family.
Party it up! Organize a Halloween party. Or a ‘just because’ party and play David Frizzell’s song. Have fun and celebrate life. I’d love an invitation… :)
