It’s Getting Cold and Dark outside
We changed our clock back to Standard Time again in North America. This means that the days are getting shorter, lights are switched on earlier and temperatures are dropping.

Here are 5 lighting trends to transform your spaces with warmth and radiance.
1. Natural Materials
Sustainable and organic, these light fixtures radiate warmth by the sheer nature of their natural materials such as grasses, rope, shells, paper and wood. Braided, woven, cut or left in their original form, they add a dynamic, textured element to an otherwise contemporary or modern design.

This type of lamp allows us to connect with nature, more than a chrome, modern fixture will do. When choosing, make sure the design speaks to you emotionally and that it fits your decor style. Even a combination of different, natural materials and styles can work really well.
The chandelier Branches 1850 (shown above) was designed by the uber famous brothers .... And ...... Dressler. The fixture is manufactured from responsibly sourced wood and comes in six different species. It is playfully adorned with glass crystals. It has a large diameter: 73 inches or 185 cm and with a height of 30 inches or 75 cm, it is a huge chandelier.

The colourful and playful chandelier on the right is made entirely of paper: who would have thought, right?!
It is part of the Paper Patchwork collection by Design studio Job This collection is a new member of Moooi’s renowned Paper Collection family. This group of lamps celebrates classic forms. Its material, paper, has limitless potential. The firm Moooi is no stranger when it comes to fabulous design. You will find a link to their site at the end of this post.
2. Architectural, Sculptured Designs
Light fixtures with an architectural, sculptured design, are becoming more popular in 2022. Clean lines and simplicity form the basis, and as an art form they easily become a focal point in any room. Fixtures are available in a great variety of shapes, finishes and sizes, from suspended to ceiling mounted and floor lamps to table lamps.

Suitable for eclectic and contemporary spaces they add a sense of luxury and drama. Particularly brass, gold finishes, as well as black powder coating are going to be trendy in 2022.

Flos US is a North American lighting supplier that always has great lamps in this category. Featured below is the Copycat, designed by Michael Anastassiades. As an LED fixture the large globe is hand-blown opal glass. The small one at the base is solid aluminum available in 4 colours: aluminum (as shown), black, copper and… 24k gold (for a lofty price!).

3. Larger-Than-Life Statement Fixtures
Go big! Large and bold lights are definitely trending in 2022.
When thinking big, most people imagine large rooms. And, granted, stairwells and large foyers have always called for large or multiple fixtures. However, smaller rooms can also benefit from larger lamps, adding plenty of drama, texture and interest. When in doubt, choose larger over smaller!

These fixtures are predominantly LED and can be molded into any form desired. In addition, LEDs are energy efficient and they are available in warm tones.
This flexibility: malleable, warm light colours and energy efficient, easily makes such a statement fixture the focal point of any room. They can also be the starting point around which an entire decor is developed.

A bold look can also be achieved by grouping light fixtures together as shown in the image above. Groupings of lights made from the same materials but with different forms also create a interesting look. Not to mention an abundance of light.
4. Scandinavian or Nordic Style
In the early 1900’s the ornamental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements slowly lost their appeal and were replaced by a new design style which originated in the Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.

“Characterized by simple, clean lines, minimalist forms, white- and grey-washed woods, and superb functionality, Scandinavian design (sometimes called Scandinavian Modern) sparked a style still relevant today.” , says Lightology.
These days Nordic style lamps are readily available since they have been popular for a while and remain so in 2022. Since the design is so simple and minimalist they fit nearly every decor.
The lamps are finished with predominantly brass overtones to warm up any contemporary decor. Dome or sphere-shaped frosted glass or metal shades remain a go-to-look. In addition, the style remains utilitarian and simple.
5. Vintage
Vintage lighting is on people’s mind again next year. Warming up an eclectic or contemporary decor easily, this type of lighting contrasts sharply with the other elements in such a decor. It makes the style stand out, become a focal point and add a nostalgic touch.
For any lighting design to be called vintage it has to be more than 20 years old. That said, there are plenty of companies that manufacture lamps that look vintage but are wholly up-to-date. With a retro feel, they are made in many forms, many materials and plenty of finishes. Destination Lighting has over 9,000 vintage style light fixtures available! A huge amount to choose from.

Vintage lamps can be identified by the following:
Metal shades in soft colours
Tinted, milky glass shades, some with prismatic options
Vintage style bulbs
Today true vintage lamps are electrically and technologically updated so they perform well in our current life styles. The addition of LED illumination makes them durable and look even better!

Vintage styles still very popular today, are crystal chandeliers, lamps with frosted, milky glass or painted metal shades. Kitchen islands tend be a favourite location for such fixtures.
Lamps made from aged metal or a fret-like design can add a lot of charm. Not to mention the emotional attachment such an item can represent.
Carefully chosen this type of lamp enhances many decor styles and adds a touch of not only warmth, but of glamour as well. One word of caution, while it can be tempting to have many vintage fixtures in your home, the impact will diminish in comparison to one or two such lamps.
